Amica $75,000 Community Challenge Begins Through March 3, Donations to United Way of Rhode Island will be Matched, up to $25,000, to Help Provide Heating Assistance to Struggling Rhode Islanders

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (February 6, 2014) Amica Insurance, in partnership with United Way of Rhode Island, Crossroads Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, began the Amica $75,000 Community Challenge on Tuesday, Feb. 4 with a 2 p.m. press conference at United Way’s Providence headquarters. The Community Challenge, now in its second year, encourages people and businesses to make donations to the three charitable organizations between now and Monday, March 3. Amica will then match those donations, dollar for dollar, up to $25,000 per charity. The charities were chosen with three basic human needs in mind: food (Rhode Island Community Food Bank), heat (United Way of Rhode Island) and housing (Crossroads Rhode Island). “Last year’s Challenge well surpassed the goal of $150,000, and we’re hoping for more of that same generosity in 2014,” said Bob DiMuccio, president, chairman and CEO at Amica Insurance. “Your donations, big or small, will go a long way in helping these charities support the less fortunate among us.” Representatives from the three organizations also spoke at the press conference. “With the cost of home heating oil rising at a time when heating assistance programs have fewer resources, more people than ever are calling 2-1-1 for help,” said Anthony Maione, president and CEO of United Way of Rhode Island. “In January, 2-1-1 received 7,000 calls for heating assistance--and there’s still cold weather yet to come. This challenge couldn’t come at a better time; its three great organizations and three great reasons to give.” “This is a wonderful thing,” said Anne Nolan, president of Crossroads Rhode Island. “For those of us that rely on the kindness of strangers to get by, this is not a good time of year to raise money. To have Amica step forward with this Challenge helps us tremendously.” “This is a critical time for us, with such a harsh winter and with so many families having to make the decision of whether to pay the heating bill or purchase food for the family,” said Andrew Schiff, CEO of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. “We have 68,000 people coming each month for food assistance. It’s our job to make sure that no one in need is ever turned away.” Those who wish to donate can do so through March 3 by visiting www.amica.com/challenge.
